Hi Folks,
I bought the Active Sky Next. [a great weather engine]
I have FSBuild version 2.4.0.31.
Does FS Build support this new weather program? I would like to be able to get the winds aloft for flight planning.
Thanks,
Jerry

Okay, fixed.

I was reading in another post, and found the answer, yes, it does work.

New to FSBuilder. How do we get it to work?

The same way it always worked except you have to point it at a different directory. If you are running Win7 the directory is: C:\Users\(your username)\AppData\Roaming\HiFi\ASNFSX\Weather. When you set things up just choose ACTIVESKY in the options and then browse to that path on line 32 of the Export Directories tab in options/settings and save it.

It's been my experience that the ASN changes make very little difference - few, if any, of the aircraft performance templates are accurate enough for a noticeable impact, and the interpolation data was rarely particularly accurate to begin with. You'll have to add a fudge factor anyway.

It depends on the flight and stations.
Cross Atlantic is awful because there are no stations with live data.
There is a very big difference if wind is 0/0 or 270/85 over a few thousend nm.

With AS2012: flighttime 5:37 wind P083
With ASN: 6:05 wind P39

A difference of 30 minutes is taken care of by that 'fudge factor' I mentioned - at a 450 kt average that's only 250 miles extra at most. I've always gotten where I was going with sufficient fuel on board, be it trans-atlantic, pacific, wherever because I know the aircraft templates are woefully inadequate and winds aloft are inaccurate to begin with. Likewise, in FS, if you look at forecast winds vs actual the differences are startling. As it happens I was one of the folks who did beta on AS2012 and my biggest complaint was wind inaccuracy aloft. Without intending to get into a lengthy discussion, since FSBuild is a route planner and not a fuel planner, you cannot interpolate winds aloft by any useful method - that's a fact and I have several years of research for NASA to back it up. Average wind aloft is more than accurate enough for our purposes or for real world planning with the application of a bit of forethought and experience.

You can get Atlantic winds and temps here: http://weather.noaa.gov/fax/wafswind.shtml
