To add to this.

You will normally see this in a flightplan where there is a change in direction which results in a different altitude to be flown to comply with the semi circular rule.

I am sure you are right but in the fp concerned it was on approach to Stuttgart (EDSS) about 70 nm distant. It might have had something to do with ATC in the Munich area - highly congested.

Might be a congestion thing but I doubt it, congestion is normally dealt with by ATC, not the pilot and STAR's do not start that high up. It's also not a step climb since it's so close to the destination. Does the heading change at that waypoint go through 0 or 180 degrees, ie from say 10 to 350 or 150 to 190?

Flight plan from LHBP (Ferihegy) to EDDS (Stuttgart) as flown by Malev when operating the F70:

GILEP UY51 ARSIN UL851 SITNI UL856 SBG UL173 MAH/N0379F240 L173 DODIL T127 TEKSI

The course to the MAH VORDME is 284 deg from the MUN VORDME; the course after MAH is 314 deg to DODIL. This does not fit in with your theory about the semicircular rule since according to it 'even' flight levels should be flown on both courses.

Yeah, that is something different then. Cannot explain that entry in this instance. Maybe the airway from there has a lower or upper limit. Do you know the initial level flown?

Flight levels vary according to ATC. Most will file to cruise at around FL320 for that distance in an F70.

You might be on to something in that before MAH the airway was Upper (UL173) but then it became Lower (L173). In Germany, as far as I know, lower means less than FL245. Maybe that's the explanation.

Yip, the UL an L in the airway desigantors should be the clue
 UL usually stands for upper airway and without means a lower one. I think it's safe to assume they are transitioning to the lower airway L173 for the final sector.
